Moving Tips For Home Buyers

By Tom Vanleen

Buying your first home can be exciting, but preparing to move can cause a lot of stress.

Packing up all the rooms of your current place is a time-consuming process. People are often surprised by just how long it can take to get things organized and ready to go. Make sure that you have everything prepared for your move ahead of time. By planning ahead and organizing, everything will go more smoothly. Don't lose important documents in the move; keep them all in an easily accessible place. To make sure so that everything is ready to be loaded up on moving day, have your apartment or old home staged. Everything is easier and you save time during your move if you prepare well.

Create a single suitcase or backpack for each person; fill it with all the necessities they would need on a 3-day vacation. This includes 3 changes of clothes that you can either unpack in or go to work in, depending on your schedule, plus toiletries, prescriptions, eyeglasses, and other vital items. If anything is missing, you will at least have the necessities if you keep these items separate from the rest of the things packed and handy for when you arrive.

For each room, clearly label an "open me first" box in red instead of black ink, so as soon as you arrive you know where are the things you want to have immediately available. This might be soap, towels and toilet paper for the bathroom; the kitchen box might include the coffee maker and paper cups, plates and flatware; etc. You will have a much simpler first 24 hours in the new place by doing this.

You're going to be better off if you move less. Delay big purchases, such as appliances and furniture, if possible, until after your move. Moving long distances can get expensive because you will end up paying based on weight. If you can avoid those big purchases until you are set up in your new home, you'll save a lot of money and trouble as you move. And if you haven't used an item in over a year, it's a good idea to lighten the moving load and get rid of the stuff.

It's easy to collect items over time that you don't even need and they simply take up space. Give them away, have a garage sale, or donate them to charity. You'll save yourself a huge amount of work when moving day arrives if you have eliminated items you don't want or need.

Babysitters can take children off your hands, giving you time to pack. Also, find help on moving day to avoid tears as the children watch their beloved toy chest being moved out of the house, and keep them away from those moving heavy furniture, and so on. If you can, send your pets to a boarding house for the day, because the doors are going to be open a lot.

Moving can be challenging, especially for first time home buyer's. Keep these moving tips in mind and you'll find that moving day will go smoothly and you'll be settled in your new home in no time.
