Investing In Diamonds Includes The Rare Colored Stones

By Daniel Chapman

About 40 years ago, fancy blue diamonds began to increase in value. In five year increments they increased by 100 per cent. In six to seven year increments, natural fancy pink ones have doubled in value. The fancy yellow stones have doubled in value as well. They join their clear counterparts as a potential investment. Investing in Diamonds follows trends.

Prices are apparently dependent on changes in the economy. Prices may rise and fall, but when it comes to the colored variety, they rise but do not fall. The colored ones are especially difficult to find for sale. Their rarity pushes the price higher and higher. But, that is not the only reason.

One reason for the interest is that most countries do not require their value to be reported for tax purposes. They are compact and easy to keep. The jewelers are the ones who own most of the colored stones, and most of them are not eager to sell.

The rarity is as follows; when 10,000 carats of diamonds come out of the mines, only a single carat is classified as colored. Some of the colors are more valuable than others. Brown stones are currently popular. They are modestly rare compared to the violet, blue, red and green stones.

There are two directions the investor can take. She or he has the opportunity to buy stock in one of the mining companies. As an alternative, the actual jewels can be bought. The colored stones, being rare, are difficult to find for sale.

Every good investment has some drawbacks. In the case of diamonds, they are not capable of being sold quickly. Each stone must often be evaluated by an expert before anyone will buy it.

Gold and silver, for example, are easily sold since they each have a fixed price based on weight. With the jewels there are many more factors to consider, such as clarity of the stone for one example. It requires an expert to estimate the value of each stone.

Value depends on multiple factors. Different values can be placed on two gems of the same carat weight. It is not like selling silver or gold where the price fluctuates, but remains stable according to weight. Weight and size are not the only features that fluctuate from stone to stone.

The experts in the field, that is the jewelers, have tried to create a method to make investing in Diamonds a more practical endeavor. Any pricing scale is made difficult by the widely separated variables intrinsic to the jewels. Some of them are purchased to sparkle on a piece of jewelry. Others are only used as glass cutting tools. One can only imagine the vast difference in beauty and quality of those two classes of the stone.
