Considerations For Hosting An International Homestay Student

By Cristine Sphan

International students often are looking for a family environment that is safe and where they can feel comfortable studying and staying during their education in your area. Often the homestay hosts are mature couples with young or grown children and have an additional room to spare.

Homestays can visit from a few months to a few years, depending on several variables including their age and whether they are in high school, university or staying for business reasons.

As a potential homestay host, there are several things you should consider before committing to have a student living in your home. The homestay may be young and naive but the host can be naive as well and may find the inherent costs in hosting don't always allow for the amount of additional income that they had planned on.

Considering Potential Problems

Be sure that you have a good line of communication. Because of the likely language barrier, this could be one of the biggest challenges you could be facing. Using basic language and smaller words will make communication easier, avoid slang and more complicated phrases. Often during the first week it is a good idea to communicate via written words as most ESL students are proficient at writing and reading but often find it difficult to string a sentence verbally.

There should be some rules that work to protect both student, and host. The host should discuss with the homestay student some basic house rules while interviewing them and their legal guardian if necessary, so that everyone understands the guidelines. When communication is extremely difficult because of language issues, have an interpreter make sure both sides understand.

Consequenses for breaking the rules should also be set in place. If the student comes home high on drugs for instance, is there zero tolerance for this? When these rules are clearly stipulated and agreed upon by the homestay and if necessary, their guardian, then evicting them if necessary will be easier.

How Much Does Privacy Mean to You?

Hosting a student can often mean that you will loose some level of privacy. You will need to accommodate for this as students will often want to practice their English they have just learned in school. If you want to have a party or other guests over, you now need to take the student into consideration when planning social gatherings at the home. When you include the homestay in some of these social situations, they often have less of a problem with it.

If you were planning on going on vacation or just getting out of town for the weekend you may have a bit of a dilemma. Most homestays require you to prepare meals for the students and be available during meal times to have the student practice their English. Taking the homestay on your vacation could be an option, but there could be other solutions.

Other things are needed to be thought through also. Since you are investing a certain amount of time cooking, cleaning and conversing with the homestay, your time with your children may be reduced. You can counter this by including your children in your interactions with your homestay.
